Friends of the Library

Our purpose is to support the library through fundraising and volunteer activities.

Fundraising Goal

The Friends of Scott Township Public Library's Goal:
$8,000 Annual distributed in 2 parts during the year.

How we do it. . .

Fundraising Activities
Throughout the year we raise money. Let us know if you would like to help with any of our events! Sign-up sheets are hung on the Friends Cork Board in the library. Located by the copy machine.

  • Annual Book Sale (Traditionally held the last week of September. Sign-ups begin in August.)
  • Election Day Bake Sales (May & November: Cooking, Wrapping to Sell & set-up, Selling.)
  • Host booths at community events
  • Candy Sale
Supplement Library Purchases
Over the years we have given the library a variety of items to help it become what it is today:
  • FAX Machine
  • Street Logo Signs
  • Subscriptions to Newspapers & Magazines
  • Hindi DVDs
  • Books
  • Book Shelves
  • Magazine Covers
  • Puppets, rocking chair, rug & more for the Children's area.

Typical Time Line of Book Sale Activities

In August:

1. Make sure the Community Room has been reserved!!
2. Post the sign-up sheet on the board in the library.
3. Double check with the township about the table set-up.
4. Contact Our Lady of Victory for extra tables.
5. Start asking for help moving the books at the start and at the end of the sale. (Possible contact to get book movers: Gary Z. the Magistrate, sometimes people need community service and they can help!)
6. Start lining up help to organize books once they are in the Community Room.
7. Start lining up help to pack-up on Sunday after the sale.
8. Double check supplies for the sale. Should be a container in the Book Sorting Room in the Maintenance Building. Display Signs, Markers, Tape, etc. ASPRIN!

In September:

1. Prepare article for FOL Fall Newsletter.
2. Contact local media outlets & Penny Saver to post the dates.
3. Contact Bert for Public Notice Banners to be updated & hung.
4. Distribute yard signs. (12 of them. Key yards around Scott.)
5. Start contacting potential places to give the left over books:

Some ideas:

* Local school districts. (2010: Sto-Rox Middle School)
* Local libraries for their sales. (2010 South Park Public Library)
* Book buyers.
* Goodwill. (Make sure to check, some years they DO NOT want them, some years they do.)
* Local Prisons and other institutions.

6. Order the Truck: Some time before the Friday of the move.
7. Pick-up Truck the night before the move.
8. Get the hand truck from the library to move the books.
9. Move books: Friday.
OR
If you can get the township to let you have access to the Maintenance Building on Saturday you might be able to get a few Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to help.
10. Set-up & Organize: Between Friday and Wednesday..

11. Host the Sale!
Tentative Sale Dates
: Weds., Sept. 21st thru Sunday, Sept. 25th.
Remember your team captains can be a big help!

12. Pack up books and prep to move them out: Sunday.
13. Move the books out! Monday.
14. Go home, soak your feet, take a long good nap! (You deserve it!)
15. Some time after Monday, when you have recovered your strength, balance out what was spent and what was made
16. Enjoy the sense of accomplishment of another successful sale!

Book Donations

The library is always accepting donations for the book sale. If you have books, videos, DVDs, CDs, or books on tapes or CD, they are accepted at the Library Circulation Desk. (Please, do not leave donations in the hall.) If you would like a Tax Donation Form, ask at the desk for one when you drop your items off.

Please, no:

  • Readers Digest Condensed books,
  • Encyclopedias,
  • Magazines, or
  • Text Books.
